Community members come to the Bozeman Bike Kitchen (BBK) to
learn to repair bikes, “cook” up new bikes from broken ones, and
enjoy a culture of bicycles as transportation and fun. BBK collects
donated bikes and provides the tools and volunteer mechanics to
help anyone interested in learning. Bikes are then distributed to
Bozeman citizens that couldn’t otherwise afford a bike.
We can’t take full credit—communities across the country have successfully started and maintained community cycling centers such as the BBK. They can take many forms. Our neighbor, Missoula, has a workspace and provides free bikes that can be checked out for day use. Los Angeles, California runs “Earn-A-Bike” classes where youth work with to learn how to repair bikes then go on to build their own. Portland, Oregon has an inspirational collection of efforts to get bikes to low-income community members. Alright, it’s really hard to work in a kitchen without a kitchen. Our temporary outdoor location has been a good start and in order to continue, we need a location. Please contact us if you know of any vacant spaces or bike-friendly businesses that would be interested in improving their business with an influx of cool people. Volunteers and donations of cables, grease, lube, tires and tubes will also help us get more people riding bikes! |
